Japanese number plates are over played? Well, we got sometimes very cool for you!
In Japan, when you need to drive a car that doesn't have a valid Shaken (car inspection) or is not registered, you can temporary use a special number plate called "Kari Number" (仮ナンバー, "Kari" means temporary). This number plate can be requested at your local city hall, and used from 3 to 5 days. It is very cheap, you don't need many documents and it basically allows you to drive pretty much anything on the road. There are different format of Kari Number but the most common on features a diagonal red line, random numbers, and kanjis related to the prefecture and the city.
Red stripe, grey zone
While the Kari Number is mostly used by garages to bring cars to the Shaken center, it also helps a lot of car enthusiasts who want to drive their car to the track or to a show and can't afford a trailer. Or when they want to go for a run in the mountains once in while...
Of course, this type of use is not permitted, but this is a grey zone and it is common to see modified cars with a Kari Number driving around. You know he is not going to the Shaken center haha!
JDM Tsurikawa boso version
Because the Kari Number is often associated to bad manners, we created our own version (which respects the official size, design and font type), with a special twist... The kanjis on the left mean Osaka (大阪） and the kanjis at the bottom mean "Bosozoku" (暴走族). Japanese regular number plates can be customized but you can only play with the numbers. So people get creative! The numbers we picked for this plate are very specific. "46-49" can be read as "Yoroshiku"
4 > yon > yo
6 > roku > ro
4 > shi (other way to prounouce 4)
9 > ku
Yoroshiku (casual version of Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu) is the must spoken expression in Japan and also probably the hardest to translate. It can be used to request something, when you introduce yourself to someone new or when you want someone to be kind to you. Bosozokus often use Kanjis with scary or bad meaning to phonetically write words and the way they write "Yoroshiku" (夜露死苦) became very popular. For this reason, alternative ways to write "Yoroshiku", including the number 4649 is associated to Bosozokus. So if you find a car or a bike with a 46-49 number plate, you know who you're dealing with haha!
